International Destinations Where Discover Card is Accepted

Discover CardDiscover card has one of the lowest international transaction fees around….a whopping 0%. That’s right they do not charge ANY fees for international purchases made in a foreign currency or international purchases made in U.S. dollars. Unlike cards issued by Visa and MasterCard, Discover’s cards cannot have dynamic currency conversion fees added by the merchant. Discover also fully, transparently and openly discloses the exchange rate used to make the foreign purchase prominently on the monthly credit card statement. In addition to non-existent fees, Discover offers some of the most attractive rewards programs in the industry and touts fantastic customer service. So why isn’t everybody using Discover Cards to make international purchases when traveling?

Unfortunately, Discover is not widely accepted in foreign countries. But that doesn’t mean Discover can’t be used at many international destinations. Below are a few countries that will accept a Discover Card.

Canada: Discover is not widely accepted in Canada, but some places catering to U.S. tourists accept Discover. Some U.S. based chain stores such as Sears will also accept Discover Cards in Canada. Discover Cards cannot be used at ATMs in Canada, but cash advances may be available at the same stores that accept Discover Card.

Europe: Discover in NOT accepted in Europe.

China: Discover has announced an agreement with China UnionPay, that once fully implemented will make Discover Card the most widely accepted U.S. based credit card in China.

The Caribbean: In addition to China, Discover is widely accepted in the Caribbean and has good ATM access there. Some of these countries include: Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Aruba, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bonaire, the British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Curacao, Dominica, the Dominican Republic, Grenada, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Maarten and St. Martin, St. Eustatius and Saba, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Turks and Caicos, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Mexico: Discover is accepted in Mexico and they are rapidly expanding access there.

When it comes to foreign transaction fees, rewards cards and customer service, the Discover Card would be impossible to beat for international travel if it were more widely accepted. As such, in countries where Discover Card is accepted it pays to ask about acceptance when shopping (if for no other reason to encourage merchants to accept Discover). But when traveling with Discover, pairing it with another great travel card from Visa, MasterCard or American Express will give the greatest flexibility when at shops where Discover Card isn’t accepted.

Just got back from Canada–got hit with a 2% fee.
Would not have used if I had known that. Had been reading no fee–please remove above. It was not widely accepted-glad I took some cash
