I found some of the best deals are from the airline websites themselves, esp as no extra fees are charged

I'm kinda with you. It depends on where you are going, who services the area, your expectations, etc. A friend of mine travels a lot and the lowest price is a priority, so Expedia, Hotwire, etc. is what they tend to use, especially for packages. I don't travel that often. Price is always a factor, but not nearly as much as with my friend. Chances are I will direct book because I want the flexibility of cancellation, etc. Sometimes when you direct book with a hotel or resort, you're given more concessions and better treatment than if you booked with a brokerage company. I know this to be true in places like Las Vegas.
